The myth is that this race feeds on pleasant dreams and cause nightmares to occur. They do this by entering the subconscious through telepathic channels that only open in deep REM sleep.
While it is true that the race is nocturnal and posses physic abilities, they cannot enter a sleeping person’s mind to feed on their dreams. This myth, or more accurately urban legend, was created out of coincidental stories of having nightmares after first meeting members of this race and being unaware as to their true nature.
These nightmares probably were stress induced, as most of them also occur after interplanetary wars.
