Observation: It has been determine that this creature is a relative of the Earth land tortoise in both size and habit. The unique difference is the shell on the back producing flora and mineral rocks based on its diet. One can tell which of the many different regions of the planet this creature calls home based on what is growing on its back.
There is more religious text involving this creature in its file than scientific observations. All of them consider this creature sacred and source of life, both symbolically and literally. Some cultures believe that within the flora on its back is an entire microscopic civilization living their lives, and killing the creature even by accident may result in an outside force beyond their control destroying the world that their culture lives on. The extremists go as far as to protect the creature from wild predators. If killed while trying to protect this creature, they are believed to have been reborn on the back somewhere in the sprouting flora.
Any rational explanation involving anything about this creature is seen as blasphemy by these cultures.
